Patient Testimonials
My rhinoplasty with Dr. Matarasso was my first real surgical procedure. When I had my initial consult with Dr. Matarasso, I immediately felt comfortable and ready to proceed with the surgery that we ended up scheduling for only a month from that day. Following the consult, his team instantly began to help me prepare for surgery day; nurses and other staff members called weekly to update me and remind me to follow all necessary steps in order to have a safe surgery/easy recovery. The surgery itself was just as simple as preparing for it. I arrived at the hospital a few hours before my scheduled operation time and Dr. Matarasso and those who assisted him during the procedure had only positive things to say and kept the mood very light, allowing me to feel at ease prior to entering the operating room. Before I knew it, the surgery was over and I woke up painlessly with my mother right at my side. I was provided with a great deal of water, ice, and constant post-op care that ameliorated the pain and helped me to wake up without worry. This surgery took place two weeks into the second semester of my freshman year of college and I can honestly say that it caused no obstacles in my academic performance. I returned back to school two days after surgery and attended class with my bandages on after taking some Tylenol. The pain and swelling was noticeably less after a few days and the cast was taken off by a doctor near my college only a week from the operation. I have always been the type of person who feared and dreaded the thought of being operated on; however, after the simple surgical experience I was so fortunately given by Dr. Matarasso, any thought like that is yet to have crossed my mind. At first I considered myself a lucky patient who just had an easy time, but I realized soon after that Dr. Matarasso genuinely knows what he is doing and his team as well as other faculty members are all part of an extremely professional group that any vulnerable patient can trust and rely on. - Sophia Febbo

Ask a Surgeon
Dr. Alan Matarasso participates in the ASPS Ask A Surgeon service. View responses to public questions below.
Should I be worried about risks associated with rhinoplasty?
RhinoplastyMember Response:
Rhinoplasty is considered to be a safe procedure. Factors to consider in addition to your overall health are the facility-operating room that it is being performed in and the anesthesia/anesthesiologist that is being used. Select a board certified plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons who has an expertise in rhinoplasty surgery.
Diep flap
Breast Implant RevisionMember Response:
Look on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons web site and a section called Match, in order to locate a plastic surgeon in your area and learn about their area of expertise.
ALCL and now to diagnose
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
I agree with Dr. Johnson’s comments. Please consult with you ASPS plastic surgeon to verify that the entire capsule was removed and to determine a plan for your care. Reviewing the pathology report would be helpful also.
Surgery
Mommy MakeoverMember Response:
Look for a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, who are all board certified. On the web site view find a surgeon and look at their profile on Plastic Surgeon Match.
Best surgery for me?
Tummy TuckMember Response:
The decisions regarding an appropriate operation will be based on your anatomy, your goals, medical condition, history (ie. have you or will you become pregnant) risk tolerance and other factors that should be discussed during your consultation and examination with a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. With that in mind, an important factor here is the nature of your extra skin. Liposuction will remove excess fat and the skin will contract to a variable degrees. Excisions or cutting procedures will remove excess skin and the length of the scar is generally commensurate with the amount of skin that you wanted tightened.
Necklift same as mini Facelift?
FaceliftMember Response:
A neck lift in general improves the area from jawline to collarbone. Whereas a facelift does that and also the area up to the cheekbones. I would suggest consulting with a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and discuss the anatomic areas that concern you.
Am I too old?
LiposuctionMember Response:
Age per se may not be a risk factor for problems with surgery, as much as your overall medical health. Some conditions can be influenced by advancing age. Your overall ability to have surgery should be assessed in conjunction with your surgeon, medical doctor and anesthesiologist. Also consider the facility where surgery is performed. I suggest that you have an in depth discussion with a board certified member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons about your goals. Since you have been contemplating surgery for so long the options for what will best suit your needs may be different then when your first considered this.
Hashimoto Hypothyroidism
Mommy MakeoverMember Response:
A mommy makeover usually involves some type of breast surgery combined with abdominal surgery, in order to address the changes that pregnancy has had on those areas. Your overall health including the thyroid condition should be assessed by your surgeon and medical doctors as one factor in the safety of undergoing the procedure. The facility (operating room), the anesthesia and surgeons expertise are other important factors in assessing the safety of the procedure for each patient on an individual basis. The thyroid condition per se shouldn’t necessarily be a contraindication to surgery.
Is 45 a good age for my first procedure?
FaceliftMember Response:
This is an age appropriate question. Meet with a board certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or locate one on their Match section. There are numerous options that can help you achieve your goals which will be dilineated at the time of your consultation. For example liposuction removes fat, lifts do as well and then remove excess skin, and non surgical treatments can also improve appearance. Your options will be based on factors such as your anatomy, your medical status and tolerance for things like downtime and risks. Consequently it is best to reconcile your anatomy and goals with the appropriate procedure, in conjunction with your consultation with a plastic surgeon who has the ability to offer the range of options that are in your best interest.
Removal of old implants & replacement
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Try to get any old records about your implants, such as the type, size etc. You should see a board certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. After a history, physical exam and any necessary additional studies, you should engage in a discussion about the risks, benefits and alternatives for your condition. It’s not a medical emergency however it should be addressed in a timely fashion.
