Should I consider a Breast Augmentation?
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello, I would advise you to have an in person or video consultation with an ASPS plastic surgeon who specializes in breast surgery. If you have never had normal breasts, you deserve to! Especially at your young age. If you have a significant size difference and are saggy, it is likely you will need a lift, at least on one side and maybe both. This will even out the skin envelope. Your breast tissue will be reshaped and lifted and it is possible to do this while still making it possible for you to breast feed later in life. If you have little to no volume in your breasts you may benefit from an implant but this is optional. It sounds like a lift would be very beneficial for you. The main downside is scars which are pretty well hidden under the breast but they tend to heal well and the trade off is having even breasts that aren’t sagging. Congratulations on your 100 lb weight loss! My office is in Alexandria, VA nearby if you wish to arrange a consultation
Should I consider a Breast Augmentation?
Question:
Hello , I am 20 years old and for as long as I could remember my breast have been saggy. I’ve never had normal looking breast or a line of cleavage and my right breast is extremely smaller than the left . I changed my lifestyle and lost 100lbs so they became smaller and saggier now the size difference is extremely noticeable . Should I consider getting a breast lift ? I’m nervous due to my age.

Making my breast smaller and not sit naturally without implants
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello JK, Many patients these days want a more natural look and want to avoid implants. If your breast is sagging, a breast lift or “mastopexy” will remove the excess skin and lift the breast but will preserve all of your breast tissue. It is a beautiful transformation. If you want your breasts smaller, then breast reduction will combine the breast lift with removal of some breast tissue (how much is your choice) to make the breast smaller and lifted. You are correct in considering breast reduction. Breasts look more youthful and sit naturally. The nipple areolar area is generally kept attached to the breast to maintain sensation. I see you live in Woodbridge and I am in Alexandria, VA if you are interested in a consultation. Best wishes to you! Dr.Susan Buenaventura.
Making my breast smaller and not sit naturally without implants
Question:
My breast sags a lot and I want them to be smaller than what they are now. I also want them to sit naturally without getting any implants. After researching, I've come across the breast reduction surgery. I want this to be my last resort if exercising does not work. Do you have any suggestions?

could I get a breast reduction revision??
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello lyn, It is certainly possible to have a revision to address issues with your breast reduction. The nipples can be evened out, and a difference in sizes can be adjusted as needed. Since it i has not been a year, it is best to return to the surgeon who did your surgery for an evaluation and discuss why you are unhappy. It is also possible to get a second opinion. It is not uncommon to do revisions following breast reduction. Best wishes to you.
could I get a breast reduction revision??
Question:
Hi, I had my breast reduction last June of the 4th. I wasn't really to happy with the results once I saw them, but the physician assistant told me it's to early just wait 6 months and see. The first issue I had was my nipples aren't even, one is lower the the other. Then I have these fold on the side of my left breast since the first time I saw my new boobs. The left breast is bigger

How small can I go
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello Matti, You have a petite frame, and sound like a good candidate for breast reduction. Usually it is possible to reduce the breast size by about half of your current size. It is difficult to predict an exact cup size, but I think it is likely you can get down to a small C. It is also wise to have your current true bra size measured, as often patients don’t know their true size. Regardless of your new bra size, breast reduction is amazing! It will change your life and it will be a dramatic difference. It is also possible to use techniques that will still allow you to breast feed, if that is in your future plans. I would encourage you to find a plastic surgeon in ASPS that you are comfortable with and get information. You don’t have to proceed with the surgery itself until you are ready. Good luck!

Eyes
Eyelid SurgeryMember Response:
Prices will vary depending on where you are in the country. In my area of Metro DC./Northern Virginia, the cost for upper and lower eyelid surgery is about $6000, including anesthesia and surgical care. It is a wonderful procedure, getting rid of the extra skin on the upper lids and removing the fat that causes fullness or bags in the lower lids. it is called and upper and lower blepharoplasty. Recovery is about 1-2 weeks and very little pain involved, just downtime. It makes a big difference and looks very natural. Good luck to you!

Vertical lines/marionette
FaceliftMember Response:
Vertical lip lines are "mimetic" lines, or ones that form from facial muscle expression. For vertical lip lines that tends to be motions that purse the lips (drinking from a straw, smoking). If you smoke, quit! If it is just a genetic trait and fillers weren't helpful I would consider laser to correct these which should be very effective. I would recommend TRL laser by Sciton with an plastic surgeon who has expertise in laser. Good luck!

Question:
Good afternoon! I'm 25yo and my vertical lip lines really upsets me. I've already tried the filling procedure with Judeverm one year ago but it didn't work. I would like to know the best procedure to get rid of this instead of fillings. Thank you.

Would I need to have more than one site done?
LiposuctionMember Response:
If there is some fat and skin above the scar and the scar is indented, you will likely benefit from a scar revision and maybe some liposuction as well. We tend to see scars stuck down to the muscle wall after c section closures. Removing excess fat with liposuction helps but the scar likely needs to be revised as well to create a smooth flat abdomen.
Would I need to have more than one site done?
Question:
I had my first child - emergency C-section - 10 months ago. I was in great shape before I got pregnant but am struggling post baby. Since the C-section, I have gained weight in my stomach and it all goes right above my incision. Am I a good candidate for liposuction? Is there any chance I can look the same as pre-baby? Also, would I need more than one site sucked on my stomach to look “normal” ?

Breast Reduction
Breast ReductionMember Response:
You have asymmetry (uneven breasts), neck pain and breast pain, plus sound like you are too large for your frame. You are a good candidate for breast reduction and I would encourage you to see an ASPS plastic surgeon in your area. They can make your breasts smaller, lift them and even them out, all in one surgery. Your age is not too young provided you understand the benefits and risks of the surgery. Be sure to discuss potential issues down the road with breast feeding (it's still possible after reduction!). It improves women's lives and self esteem SO much. Try to find a surgeon you are very comfortable with. Seeking information in person is vital. You don't have to proceed with surgery until you feel ready.
Breast Reduction
Question:
Hello, I am a 20 year old girl, and I want to get a breast reduction. My boobs are probably a DD but my right boob is so much larger than the left. They are also saggy. I have this lump forming on the back of my neck from slouching so much. It physically hurts me to sit up straight for more than a minute. I wear nothing but sports bras because my boobs hurt so bad. Would it be a good idea?

Cost
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello, you would need an in person consultation to be sure of costs and the surgical procedure, but breast reduction is appropriate for women with breasts that are too large, causing neck, back, shoulder pain and are out of proportion and wish to have smaller breasts. At our outpatient hospital, self pay costs for breast reduction would be about $9000.00 . (There is sometimes an option for insurance coverage but it depends completely on your individual policy). It sounds like you are a good candidate, and breast reduction changes women's lives!
Cost

I've been suggested by friends with the same issues as me to get a breast reduction about how much would that be for someone 143lbs 5 feet 4.5 inches with size 34 G breasts

How long is the wait?
Breast Implant RevisionMember Response:
It sounds like your surgeon used good judgment based on the condition of the breast tissue with the ruptured silicone at the time. Waiting 3 months is very reasonable, to let the tissue get back to normal before you place a new implant. While it is difficult to be without your implants for the waiting time, if implants were placed in an unhealthy pocket, you have a higher likelihood of infection early on, contracture later and possible infection. Sometimes ruptured implant pockets look okay and sometimes they don't. Surgeons have to use their judgment at the time (for the patient's benefit). Good luck to you!
How long is the wait?
Question:
I had textured gel implants for 8years. I went in to have them replaced, I wanted a bigger, more proportionate. Different surgeon. I came out of surgery with implants removed, and no new ones. Both implants had ruptured, unbeknownst to us. He is making me wait at least 3 months before another surgery to avoid capsular contracture. He is triple board certified so I trust him. Any other opinions?

Insure what to do
Breast Implant RemovalMember Response:
Your implants can be removed without previous records but it is always worth a try to obtain them. Many women have the same situation as you where the surgeon is no longer in practice from many years ago. If you remember the hospital where you had the surgery they might have the records. You also can check with the current major implant companies, Allergan, Mentor or Implantech that were used at that time. Rest assured that your surgeon can removed them without the records. I always photograph the removed implants for the patients and they often have the manufacturer and lot number stamped on them. There is a national registry now, but there was not one 20 years ago. If you have new implants placed, you can have your information shared with the national registry by your surgeon. Good luck to you.
Insure what to do
Question:
I've seen here that it's recommended to have a history of previous implant procedure for reference. What if it's been 20 yrs since and records are lost and surgeon no longer practicing. How can I obtain a hostory? Is there a registry of my implants when it was done in a national registry? Can a current surgeon be able to still remove my implants without knowing my history?

breast augmentation for minors
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Most ASPS plastic surgeons would recommend waiting until at least 18 for surgery. Silicone implants are not recommended by the FDA until age 22 but saline is available. It is important to allow your body to develop and get comfortable with your body image prior to undergoing any surgery. It is possible to have surgery with parental consent but more important to have it at the right time for you.

I would not recommend undergoing elective surgery until you feel completely comfortable. Remember it is elective! perhaps seek counseling prior to considering elective surgey.
How to overcome irrational fear of dying from anesthesia or surgery?
Question:
I've wanted a nose job for years & finally got the support of my parents who are both doctors. I'm a bit scared of surgery&GA since I've heard stories of people getting cardiac arrest or duying in the OR. I have consultations with 2 board-certified surgeons soon. How can I address my general anesthesia fears and fear of dying to ensure a safe, successful surgery?

Abdominoplasty with upper abdominal liposuction
Tummy TuckMember Response:
It is safest to avoid upper abdominal liposuction the same day as a tummy tuck, as it puts extra strain on the blood supply to the abdominal skin and can increase the risk of wound healing issues or skin necrosis. Having said that, many surgeons do combine these procedures safely. The safest route would be to do these as two separate operative procedures.

It is very safe in properly trained hands, which is why it is wise to choose your surgeon through the American Society of Plastic Surgery. Good luck to you!

After deflation
Breast Implant RevisionMember Response:
If they are deflated, it is wise to have them removed. This should be a straight forward process and will avoid issues from the deflated implant folding and possibly causing damage to the breast skin from the inside out. You will have a drain for about a week. Hope this is helpful!

Breast Reduction after nursing
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Congratulations on your pregnancy and growing family! You are a great candidate for breast reduction. You should wait at least 6/months after you stop nursing ( which will go by quickly) to have your breast reduction. Surgery can stimulate the lactation process sometimes so it is wise to wait. You can certainly seek a consultation at any time to gather information. If you do have more children in the future, nursing may still be possible with the proper technique.

Help!
Breast Implant RemovalMember Response:
If you have not had a good experience with your breast implants, it makes sense to have them removed. It is also possible that your symptoms are unrelated to the implants. Removing them is a good first step (a medical clearance for surgery from your doctor is wise) and then you can work up any symptoms with your medical doctor or rheumatologist.

I’m 28 years old I got breast implants in 2017 . Unfortunately the last year and a half has been nothing but complications and issues . Botox and Injectors- Nurse Injectors or MD?
Botulinum ToxinMember Response:
Like Dr. Wong, surgeons have very extensive training in all aspects of facial anatomy and aesthetics and are more experienced injectors. Simply tell the office you would like the surgeon to do your injections if you have already had a good experience. Congratulations on your daughter's wedding.

Have Implants, Can I have a lift and keep my implants
Breast LiftMember Response:
Hello, it is quite reasonable to need some additional tightening of the breast skin after 13 years. If you are happy with your implant size there is no need to change them, but let the plastic surgeon check the implants as well at the time of your consultation. Mentor implants are high quality and it is great that you are still happy with them. Cost will vary widely with the location, surgeon etc. In the DC area, it is about $7000 with surgery, anesthesia and follow up care. I hope this is helpful.

Bell’s palsy
LiposuctionMember Response:
Bells Palsy does tend to resolve over time. Liposuction in the facial area can certainly cause injury to the branches of the facial nerve so this could be another possible explanation. See your plastic surgeon for follow up, but it may be a permanent problem after three years. Perhaps consultation with a neurologist would also be appropriate to rule out other causes. Best wishes.

Heat radiates into my left breast when standing up from laying down then goes away
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello, it sounds like you may have an infection. It is important to see your plastic surgeon to check. With an implant in place, it is important to assess this and treat if necessary. Signs of infection can be warmth, redness, pain in the breast or fever. Hydrate, rest and check in with your surgeon. Good luck to you.

Question:
I had my breast implant surgery 5 weeks ago abroad it’s under the muscle and I still have a little pain in my chest muscle but my left breast gets really hot when I stand up after laying down and I think it’s maybe because of the incision since it hasn’t healed completely because I overused my antibiotic ointment but I stopped using it a week ago, I had an abdominal rash three days ago but faded

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy
Tummy TuckMember Response:
You have a diastasis recti (common with your condition or twins, large babies etc) and excess skin. It sounds like an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) would benefit you and correct these issues, creating a stronger core, better back support and remove the excess skin. It is common to wait until you have finished childbearing though not absolutely necessary. This is not a procedure that insurance covers, but many hospitals have discounted fees for surgeries that are self pay. It is worth getting the muscle repaired and excess skin removed, it will benefit you now and down the road. Good luck!
Excessive weight gain during pregnancy
Question:
Hi- I gained an excessive amount of weight - approx 80 lbs - during my first pregnancy because I had a condition called polyhydramnios which causes too much amniotic fluid to be produced. The end result was a lot of loose abdominal skin and significant abdominal muscle separation with chronic back pain. Is there any way insurance will cover a procedure to fix my abdomen?
Susan K. Buenaventura, MD's Response:
You have a diastasis recti (common with your condition or twins, large babies etc) and excess skin. It sounds like an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) would benefit you and correct these issues, creating a stronger core, better back support and remove the excess skin. It is common to wait until you have finished childbearing though not absolutely necessary. This is not a procedure that insurance covers, but many hospitals have discounted fees for surgeries that are self pay. It is worth getting the muscle repaired and excess skin removed, it will benefit you now and down the road. Good luck!
Tummy tuck vs Liposuction
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Congratulations on your two children. Liposuction will remove excess fat and help reshape your body. It doesn't result in weight loss, more reshaping. If you do not have excess skin or muscle looseness (diastasis), then liposuction sounds like a better option for you. This surgery is safe in the hands of properly trained and board certified Plastic Surgeons who are members of The American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Good luck!
Tummy tuck vs Liposuction
Question:
as a result of two back to back pregnancies i have around 22 pounds still to lose. most if the fat is on my belly plus some on hip and flanks. my belly skin is very good no stretch marks what so ever. to got ride of this belly fat do i need lipo or tummy tuck? i dont have excess skin? Also i need to know if liposuction is safe, i know couple of people died from liposuction?

Overall cost
Eyelid SurgeryMember Response:
The upper eyelid will require mainly skin removal and the lower lid will require removal of excess fatty pockets and a small amount of skin. This is an upper and lower blepharoplasty and generally requires about 2 hours of surgery. Cost will vary with the surgeon and facility where surgery is performed, and area of the country. In my area charges are generally $5000 plus anesthesia charges. You can get a quote at the time of your consultation.

Age
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
I feel that breast augmentation is best done once the patient is at least 18. It is important to feel ready psychologically as well and have family support. The FDA recommends patients are 22 before getting silicone implants but saline implants are available at a younger age. Discussion with your primary care doctor can also be very helpful in this regard. It is always good to have a consultation, learn as much as you can about the procedure and then move forward at a later date if necessary. It is one of the best procedures we offer! I hope this is helpful to you.

Lose skin vs excessive fat
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Congratulations on your weight loss and athleticism. The excess skin does have fat attached to it but the majority is likely excess skin from when you were heavier. You are a good candidate for skin excision. On the trunk it would be abdominoplasty, on the arms brachioplasty, and on the thighs a thigh lift or lower body lift. Every case is unique. Seek a consultation with an ASPS surgeon in your area to plan out the process. It would not all be done at once. Hope this is helpful.
Lose skin vs excessive fat
Question:
Hello all, About 3 years ago I lost about 100 pounds. I have been training to compete in a fitness show. My question is how much am I doing with lose skin vs excessive fat? I feel like the more I push my body to change nothing ever really changes. It has been super frustrating . I live in a small town so my resources have been limited.

Thick and round nose
RhinoplastyMember Response:
It is true that very thick skin can mask the results of a rhinoplasty. If the thickness of your skin is due to rhinophyma (overgrowth of sebaceous glands) then TRL laser may help. It is unlikely that further rhinoplasty would help. Hope this is helpful.
Thick and round nose
Question:
My skin is very thick. I had a nose job with no results. I had some plastic surgeons tell me that my skin is too thick and I was not a candidate. I want my nose to be thin. I really do not want to spend more money if the outcome is not acceptable. To go deeper in this...the surgeon killed himself a month later (I do not know why) No one wants to help me. The staff just closed the office and left

I need Help
Breast ReductionMember Response:
i am sorry to hear of your pain and you sound like you would benefit from a breast reduction. If you have found a surgeon you like, get a quote and work on saving for it. It will be worth it. It is a life changing procedure. Some surgeons may offer this in their office facilities which is usually less expensive than a hospital setting. If you surgeon offers Care Credit it is sometimes possible to get 0% interest for one year. Think of it like saving for a car or a vacation....it will be worth the effort. If you feel that is not an option then you may find some teaching hospitals that offer reduced cost for surgery by training residents. I wish you the best!

What are my options?
LiposuctionMember Response:
At age 27 you should have good elasticity in your skin, so removing the fat non surgically should be effective. Coolsculpting may be effective for you. I would recommend you seek a consultation in a plastic surgeon's office where they can give you all of your options. Surgical liposuction leaves very minimal scars also. Good luck!
What are my options?
Question:
I’m a 27 year old woman who has been fit and active for most of my life, however I’ve always had this stubborn “pooch” of fat on my lower belly. I’ve lost weight, gained weight, and lost weight again, and got very into fitness, but that area never really shedded fat like the rest of my body did. What are my options on minimal liposuction? I don’t want scars!!

Extrusion
Breast Implant RevisionMember Response:
Once the implant has extruded through the skin, it must be removed, the breast allowed to heal ( or the site might be excised and closed that day, and after 2-3 months you can safely replace the implant. Otherwise the infection risk is too great.
Extrusion
Question:
Once an implant has become exposed due to the skin being too thin to support it or the implant being too big to be supported, how is that treated? Do you just exchange the implant out with a new one or how does that work?

Breast reduction for small breasts
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello Mari, if your breasts feel too heavy and too large for your petite frame then a breast lift/reduction sounds appropriate. It is always important to leave enough breast tissue to keep the breast healthy. A breast lift would remove excess skin but not breast tissue so your cup size should remain the same. It sounds like you need a little bit of both. Find an ASPS surgeon near you for an in person consultation and best wishes.
Breast reduction for small breasts
Question:
Hi, I'm wondering if it's possible to get a breast reduction if I have 32 B breasts. Ideally I'd like to be an AA. I've heard that it's not always recommended because it can leave you with no shape, but I have a fairly petite frame (5'3, 108 lbs) so I don't know if that would be different or not. I also don't know if a breast lift is more advisable. Thank you for your help!

What's The Difference
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
A breast lift will remove excess skin but keep your breast tissue and corrects sagging breasts. Scars are usually around the areola and under the breast. Augmentation means you are increasing the breast size with implants. Silicone gives the most natural look and feel, but saline is also available and you should choose the one you prefer. Sometimes patients have both procedures done but each case is individual. Hope that is helpful!

Birthmarks
Cosmetic SurgeryMember Response:
Hello, if it is mainly brown it will likely respond to a combination of laser and broad band light. Birthmarks can be at varying depths in the skin and clinical evaluation and your skin's response to the treatment will dictate treatment endpoints. It woukd be common to need multiple sessions which will affect cost. I would definitely recommend seeing a plastic surgeon first to determine if surgery or laser is best.
Birthmarks
Question:
So I have a small brown birthmark on my face, it’s about 1 by 1 and a half cm right under my cheekbone, what would my options be towards this and would the cost be a lot, and would plastic surgery be the best way to go?

Breast lift during explant
Breast LiftMember Response:
They are both right....it can be done but can also be risky. If your implants are currently below the muscle that makes it a little safer. If they are above the muscle and your breast tissue is thin it can be risky for damaging blood supply. Obviously it requires an experienced surgeon and good judgment to advise you properly. It is always safest to do them separately but isn't always necessary. Go with the surgeon you feel most comfortable with.
Breast lift during explant
Question:
Hello, I’ve had one plastic surgeon tell me she would perform a lift along with my en bloc explant and another tell me it’s too dangerous as it could compromise the blood supply to do a lift along with en bloc explant. I had an in-person consult with both and both did an examination. So is it ok to have a lift done along with an en bloc explant?

Diastasis Recti repair
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Hello, I would see a plastic surgeon first as they will repair the diastasis and possibly the hernia as well. If they feel you need a general surgeon also, they can recommend it at that time. Diastasis recti repair is not covered by insurance and cannot be submitted to Medicare. The hernia repair can be submitted for insurance coverage, so you will have part cosmetic, part insurance for billing purposes. Ask ASPS for a list of board certified plastic surgeons near you. Best wishes.

Can I go super small
Breast ReductionMember Response:
It is usually possible to reduce down by 2 cup sizes with a breast reduction. It is also not possible to predict an exact cup size as bra sizes/fittings differ widely. You can rest assured that a breast reduction can remove a significant amount of tissue. It is also important to leave behind enough tissue to keep the remaining breast healthy. I would suggest that before you undergo surgery, you get professionally fitted for your bra size (it's often larger than women think). Best wishes to you!

Revision post-reduction
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Insurance is not likely to cover a revision, but all insurance companies have their own policies. Breasts do settle over 10 months, so it is definitely worth seeking a revision so that you are completely happy with the result. See your surgeon to discuss. There may be some cost involved but hopefully minimal. Best wishes to you.

capsular contracture
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello, capsular contracture can occur for many reasons, mild infection, the implants being above the muscle, seroma, hematoma, or sometimes it just the way a patient heals. Please return to your surgeon so they can discuss exactly how your implants were done and what measures might correct your capsular contracture. Good luck to you!

Scar revision
Body ContouringMember Response:
Hello, absolutely your scar can be fixed. It can be done in the operating room with you asleep or possibly under local anesthesia, depending on your surgeon's opinion. Most often the entire scar will be excised, then re-closed with dissolvable sutures. You will still have a scar, but it won't be indented and is much less noticeable when it is flat. I would encourage you to see an ASPS plastic surgeon near you. Actually I am in Alexandria, VA, not too far from Gaithersburg. Best wishes.

Cleavage Augmentation
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello I also agree with Dr. Vemula's answer. It is important to respect the natural border of your breasts and it's not really possible to force the implants to sit closer together. Fat grafting can help fill in the inner part somewhat. Other things that can help are putting in a wider implant to fill in the full space and limiting the lateral dissection during surgery to keep the implants closer together. Hope that is helpful!

How expensive is it?
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello Max, it does change mens' lives to have the size of their breast reduced. Surgery is very effective and may be surgical excision of the gland or liposuction combined with surgical excision. A compression vest afterward is important. Cost will vary widely, but in the Washington DC area, it is about $5,000. You should be able to get a written estimate at an inperson consultation. If you smoke, quit! Best wishes to you.

Pain in left breast
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
This degree of pain is unusual after augmentation. Please consult with your surgeon in person to discuss. It may make sense to consider implant removal at some point. If you cannot see your surgeon from 2014, find a good ASPS surgeon in your area and have an in person consultation. Best wishes.
Pain in left breast
Question:
I've had 3 augmentations all due to ruptures. The last one in 2014 and recently I've had severe tearing, ripping pain. This occurs when I'm sleeping and reposition or get up and the pain is so intense it drops me to my knees. My left breast is very lumpy and mammo and ultrasounds have ruled out cancer and think it's scar tissue. Could this pain be from scar tissue and is it correctable? Thx!

Boob Reduction
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello Debra, it is common for us to see patients who need a breast reduction on one side to correct asymmetry. There is no standard cost, you should make an appointment with an ASPS plastic surgeon in your area and they can provide you with that information. In our area (Washington DC) it would be about $3500.00. The size of the breast doesn't dictate the fee, although larger breasts may take longer to do and may increase the cost that way. Good luck to you.

Brest reduction at 16
Breast ReductionMember Response:
You sound like a good candidate for breast reduction which will make your breasts smaller (about half their size) and lift them as well. Your age of 16 is acceptable if you have parental support and you feel mature enough to handle the decision to have surgery. My young patients truly benefit in terms of comfort, relief of neck and shoulder pain, better self esteem and simpler things like being able to wear tops and clothes and bathing suits that 16 year olds wear. Make sure you find a surgeon you are comfortable with and discuss the possibility of having children and being able to breast feed down the road. It's a long way off, but important to discuss before the surgery. With todays techniques you have a very high likelihood of being able to breast feed later. Breast reduction changes lives! I wish you the best. Insurance may or may not cover this at your age but you sound like you will benefit from this surgery.

Flap Surgery without mastectomy
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello, Congratulations on losing 60 lb. It is typical to have loose breast skin after this. If you need more volume, breast implants are very safe and would be the standard of care. Flap surgeries are more complex, higher risk and reserved for breast cancer reconstruction. Implants and a breast lift, or a breast lift alone depending on your needs, will help restore your breast shape. Find a great ASPS surgeon near you on this site.
Flap Surgery without mastectomy
Question:
I just lost 60 pounds and now have very saggy breast. I am looking into breast surgery to make them fuller. I have been reading that implants are very unsafe. My sister in law (who had breast cancer and flap surgery) mentioned that there is a procedure where you can take fat from parts of the body and move it to your breasts. Can you do this without a mastectomy?

Recovery time
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Breast reduction is a wonderful and life changing procedure! It is also major surgery and though it is outpatient surgery, you must allow sufficient recovery time. I would recommend two weeks off of work as a minimum. If your job is more physical you may require additional time. Patients do not have much pain but still need to take it easy to avoid risks of bleeding. Good luck!

How soon safe it is.
LiposuctionMember Response:
This is a question that is best addressed by your surgeon, who knows how extensive the liposuction was, if you are fully recovered and how long the breast lift surgery will be. It's good to give your body time to recover before undergoing a second major surgery, especially when it is elective. If you have already had the liposuction, I would recommend waiting 6 weeks or more, to minimize the risk of complications.

Pricing
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Cost will vary widely by region. In the Washington DC area, surgical fee is around $6000 and anesthesia and facility fee may be another $4000. This would be reduced hospital fees when patients are paying out of pocket. With regard to insurance, only your insurance company can tell you what your cost would be. It’s worth it, and a life changing surgery.

Scar tissue or more Gynecomastia

Hello, gynecomastia does change and soften over time. Massage that you can do daily in the shower or at bedtime helps. It is good advice to wait because some firm areas will soften and flatten as they may be some fat necrosis. If after 6 months (you're halfway there) the nipple area is still puffy or feels like there is some glandular tissue there, a revision may benefit you to remove additional tissue. One of the worst problems can be over resecting the glandular tissue behind the nipple, so most surgeons try not to over do it. Hope that helps. Keep in close touch with your surgeon and keep massaging.
Scar tissue or more Gynecomastia
Question:
I had Gynecomastia surgery 3 months ago, I have had compression done and I have been doing massages on the scar tissue but I still have puffiness on my nipple and I still feel something there. Is gland that was never removed? I went back for a follow up like a month ago and my surgeon said it was just scar tissue and that it takes a while for it go down.

Age limitation
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Age is not a limitation, your general health is the most important issue. If you are a candidate for anesthesia, you are a candidate for tummy tuck or facelift ( not the same day). It's best to be in a healthy weight range, absolutely no smoking, heart must be healthy and blood pressure well controlled. If you are a diabetic, your A1C level will be important. Work with your i trrbest and plastic surgeon as a team and you will do well. Hope that helps.

Breast Reduction Correction
Breast ReductionMember Response:
You should consult in person with your breast reduction surgeon. It's unusual to shrink from a D to an A just from swelling. It's also very difficult to predict an exact cup size. If you feel you are too small now then your best option would be to consider implants. Unfortunately insurance does not cover elective breast implants. Your surgeon may be able to help reduce your out of pocket cost. The important thing is that you are happy with your breast size in the end!
Breast Reduction Correction
Question:
I had a breast reduction in November 2018. I was originally a 34H and I wanted to go down to a 34D. After the procedure they were perfect size, however after all the swelling went down I am now about an A cup, a B cup at most and I'm miserable. I never wanted to be so small chested but I can't afford a 6000 augmentation. What are my options? Would insurance cover anything? I'm unhappy.....

Average cost of reduction and lift
Breast ReductionMember Response:
If the implants are causing her pain, she may be very happy with removal. Replacement is also possible but if she wants smaller breasts, be sure to replace with smaller implants. If implants are ruptured and capsules are also involved, surgery may take more time and be more costly. Reduction or lift is sometimes done the same day and sometimes done as a separate procedure, once the breasts have healed from the implant removal. A breast reduction will remove skin and breast tissue, to make the breasts smaller an d lifted. The breast lift will remove skin only and lift the breasts while maintaining the breast size. It is wise to see an in person consultation to get firm numbers about cost. In Charlotte, NC, I can highly recommend the Charlotte Plastic Surgery group.

Autoimmune disorder
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Yes you can still be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if your rheumatologist agrees and they work closely with your plastic surgeon to prepare you. Medications like Naproxen (NSAID) need to be stopped temporarily as they are blood thinners. Other medications that treat your autoimmune disorder may interfere with your wound healing ability and need to be stopped temporarily as well. I would encourage you to speak to your rheumatologist, then find a plastic surgeon you have confidence in. Lots of pre planning will result in a smooth post operative course. Good luck to you.

Health Concern
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Hello, it's still possible to have the tummy tuck done safely if your internist and plastic surgeon work together. Hypertension should be well controlled with medication. Thyroid should also be well controlled with medication. This will help you through the anesthesia safely. As your RA cannot be cured, it's more a question of what medications you are on (like steroids or chemotherapy) and whether they will need to be stopped temporarily to allow proper wound healing. With proper preparation, you can have your tummy tuck done. I would recommend a hospital setting and an overnight stay. Hope this is helpful!

Recovery
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Congratulations on your decision to have breast reduction surgery. Not clear if you had the surgery already or not. I tell my patients to avoid alcohol for two weeks after surgery as it is a blood thinner, it's dangerous to combine with narcotic pain medication and they need to be very careful in general the first couple weeks. Healing begins the day of surgery but exercise, etc will have to wait about 6 weeks. Going back to work is feasible at 3 weeks, depending on your job. Hope that is helpful!

Restore my breasts
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
After 30 years, the skin has stretched and a secondary "tightening" of skin, or a breast lift will help reshape the breasts. If you want to be a larger cup size (you have lost weight or breasts got smaller) then you will also need to add volume with implants. Fat grafting also an option for more conservative volume addition). Be sure to see a surgeon very experienced in breast reduction as the second surgery requires additional expertise.

Derma Fillers for midforehead
Dermal FillersMember Response:
Be careful with fillers in forehead, as there are a lot of blood vessels and one of the dangers of any injection is intrvascular injection. It is rare but you should be aware of this risk. I would recommend using hyaluronic acid fillers if you do decide to proceed, as there is a medication to dissolve it if you have a problem or don't like the result. Be sure to find a very experienced BC plastic surgeon from ASPS and understand that this is an "off label" treatment. Having said that, fillers are a good way to improve contour in the face.

I have had botox injections on my forehead but I still have a hollowed out look in the mid forehead region and was wondering about dermafillers for this area to create more fullness. What type of dermafillers could be used for this area and is it safe to use a cannula for that area ?

One frown line between my eyes! And an Indentation in the bone underneath....I can feel it!
Dermal FillersMember Response:
The indentation is from years of frowning with the corrugator muscles and if you have a bony defect there as well, it can be treated with fillers. You need Botox to weaken the corrugator muscles causing your frown lines. Secondly you would benefit from some fillers injected into that area to fill in the "dent". My preference is Botox and some Restylane into the indentation.
One frown line between my eyes! And an Indentation in the bone underneath....I can feel it!
Question:
I'm 48 with one vertical frown line between my eyes. I've noticed my bone right under it is indented exactly! I plan to have Botox in the next couple months for this. Is everyone's bone underneath the area between the eyes indented? Or just me? Could it be a contributing factor to why my one wrinkle is so pronounced and began to form in my 20's? What can be done about it? Any guess in the dark?

life of implants/breastfeeding
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello Alex, there is no need to replace breast implants every 10 years. It is wise however to see your plastic surgeon every couple years for a check and keep your records current. Indications to replace or remove an implant would be a leakage, pain or a desire to change the size or remove them. You can breast feed with implants. It is best if they are placed under the muscle to keep the breast healthy. Milk supply should be fine with reasonably sized implants. I would recommend smooth round implants filled with saline or silicone. I am in Alexandria VA if you desire an in person consultation.

Rupture removal
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hi Terry, I do many of these cases and would agree that due to the age of the implants it's wise to remove both. I have often found the opposite side to be ruptured even when the MRI didn't read that way. You can find a skilled surgeon first on this site, then ask questions! Removing the capsule does require experience and skill to preserve all your breast tissue. I hope this is helpful.

I would anticipate your needing surgery to reduce the gynecomastia. As other surgeons have said, it is absolutely life changing at any age, teenage to seniors. smooth implants
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Both smooth and textured implants may appear to move if they are placed under the muscle, (which is recommended) with intense pectoral exercise. If you are a serious body builder, sometimes above the muscle is an option. The smooth implant has been more popular over the years, and many patients and surgeons are shifting toward smooth implants due to the concerns about ALCL. Implants greatly improve self esteem and are still one of the most frequently requested and performed surgeries. Smooth implants do feel a little softer than textured. Good luck!

28 yr old female seeking medical advise for tummy tuck with lipo to flanks. I lost 86 pounds.
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Congratulations on your weight loss and educating yourself about VTE. Two important factors within your control are body mass index (BMI) and not smoking. BMI if 30 or less is ideal; BMI of 32 is acceptable.. Risks for VTE appear higher in the outpatient/ambulatory setting. Adequate hydration, pain management and patient experience is optimized with an overnight stay. Use of Ted stacking, sequential compression boots, proper positioning ( hips flexed, knees bent) and sometimes lovenox injections post operatively all help. If I have a patient whom I consider high risk I will obtain help from a hematologist. Early ambulatory is critical, and the fact that you have gotten through a previous major procedure without difficulty is a good sign. Make sure you Have a board certified anesthesiologist caring for you. I hope that is helpful!

Removal/replace?

Once you know the implant is ruptured, removal is recommended, especially if they are 32 years old. If you haven't had a mammogram in a year, you should get one before surgery. Removal if the implant and capsule definitely require expertise. Start your search on this site to ensure a board certified plastic surgeon.

Five months ago I learned that one of my 32-year old implants is ruptured and calcified. I’ve been told numerous times by my doc that I have very dense breast but had been instructed to have annual mammograms (even upon my concern for rupture). Augmentation/lift after weight training
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Intense pectoral workouts and strong muscles definitely are a challenge for subpectoral implants. Wrapping the upper pole or a bra band to stabilize the implants can help ( don't do this without your surgeons permission. ). If they don't drop you canbrevise later but give it more time. Stop your pectoral exercises. I don't even let patients carry heavy purses. Sometimes subglandular implants are the answer, but it's too early to tell.

Some offices stock implants and others order for each individual case, which is what I do, so we can get the exact implant the patient wants. Speak with the surgeon directly to clarify your implant choice and cost. Legality issues are best answered by a lawyer. It's hard to call something malpractice if no surgery was done.

Question:
Hi! I consulted with a plastic surgeon & agreed on either 350 cc or 400 cc with the gummy bear type silicone- which the doctor recommended. I decided to do it & paid the full amount upfront. After asking questions to the office, I found out they didn’t have the size nor the implants I was assured I’d get. They are trying to keep the down payment. This is illegal, right? I never signed the papers

Any surgeons willing to preform on teen?
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Breast reduction at 16 is reasonable as long as your daughter is mature enough to understand the benefits and risks of the procedure. You just need to find another surgeon (through ASPS) who considers breast reduction their specialty. It is important at her age that milk ducts and the potential for breast feeding are preserved, and that the nipple stays attached to the breast during the procedure. Insurance is unlikely to cover at her age but most patients I see pay out of pocket for breast reduction. It's worth it!

You didn't mention your age but most likely you need some fat removed and a little skin, a lower blepharoplasty on one side. It will vary widely depending on where you live. In the DC metro area, lower lid blepharoplasty would be about $3500, including surgery and anesthesia fees in a private office OR. It would be an additional $1000 more for a hospital setting.

MRI
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
The best thing to do is find a new plastic surgeon to consult with, obtain your records if possible. While the FDA did suggest an MRI every three years to follow silicone implants, it is best to work with a plastic surgeon to use if this is appropriate for you. I like to check my implant patients once per year, and there are any clinical concerns we'll get the MRI on schedule. Good luck!

I was told to contact PCP and schedule an MRI but bunch of loops to go through before they will do MRI. I just need MRI

Double chin
FaceliftMember Response:
The " double chin" is composed of excess fat, excess skin and loose muscle. If it is very saggy as you describe, most likely it will need surgery to correct the loose skin, some liposuction to remove the excess fat, and t repair and tightening of the SMAS and platysmal muscle. Surgery is usually done with the patient asleep, and takes about 4 hours. There is very little pain, but it is important to have downtime to allow healing. I am in Alexandria VA if you desire a consultation.

Question:
What surgery would reduce a double Chin. Not the little type of double chin. Fat and Hanging saggy skin? Is it done with face lift?
Susan K. Buenaventura, MD's Response:
The " double chin" is composed of excess fat, excess skin and loose muscle. If it is very saggy as you describe, most likely it will need surgery to correct the loose skin, some liposuction to remove the excess fat, and t repair and tightening of the SMAS and platysmal muscle. Surgery is usually done with the patient asleep, and takes about 4 hours. There is very little pain, but it is important to have downtime to allow healing. I am in Alexandria VA if you desire a consultation.
Can I have implants after oncoplastic surgery for DCIS?
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
It sounds like you are having a lumpectomy and radiation on the diseased side, then an breast lift on the opposite side? If you have radiation, an implant later may be difficult as radiation can make the tissue less pliable. There is also a higher risk of implant loss in these settings. If you have difficulties with the implant, you always have a flap (TRAM, DIEP, latissimus) as a reconstructive option. The type of radiation also matters (the entire breast vs just focal radiation). Be sure to discuss with your surgeon all of your options. If you are very small breasted, and a lumpectomy will leave significant volume loss, you can consider other options like a skin/nipple sparing mastectomy with immediate implant reconstruction. This might also avert the need for radiation. Every case is different, depending on your pathology, location of tumor, size of tumor, etc. I hope this is helpful!
Can I have implants after oncoplastic surgery for DCIS?

I was recently diagnosed with DCIS and am scheduled to have an oncoplasty with breast lift to other side. Since this surgery reduces breast size because of large amount of tissue removed is it possible to have implants later on? Thank you

Capsular Contracture??
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
It does sound like capsular contracture, likely related to your lifting and working the pectoral muscle too much too soon. Stop stressing the pec muscle, massage the upper pole of the breast , and wear a bra band across the upper poles to stabilize the implants and may improve the position
Capsular Contracture??
Question:
I’ve had my breasts for about 2 years. I started a new job about a year ago which is an active job that requires some lifting. I’ve noticed that my right breast has become a little higher than the left & feels slightly firmer. I first thought it may be the development of stronger muscles so I started doing more lifting with my left which has helped a little but I’m still not even can it be CC?

Surgery cost and payment
Mommy MakeoverMember Response:
A mommy makeover, or tummy tuck and breast procedure ( lift, implants or both) is usually self pay as these are cosmetic procedures that aren't submitted to insurance. Cost will vary widely so best to meet with a surgeon to get that information. In the Washington DC area, a tummy tuck and breast implants would be about $18,000 with surgery, anesthesia and facility fee.

Im wondering if its possible to have a mommy makeover with out insurance and to just pay completely out of pocket? Is that aloud? Also how much would that even cost fully out of pocket no insurance?

Cortisone to fix lower eyelid malposition caused by scar; ectropion
Eyelid SurgeryMember Response:
It sounds like you have "sclera show", meaning the white part of the eyeball is exposed. At 7 months out, it would be appropriate to return to surgery. If you are older, your lid muscles may have had some pre existing laxity which can be corrected with a canthopexy or tightening of lid. The scar of the lower lid will likely need to be released and if skin is too tight a graft may be needed. Your surgeon can help determine what is needed.
Cortisone to fix lower eyelid malposition caused by scar; ectropion
Question:
7 years ago I suffered an orbital blowout fracture to my right eye socket. The surgery to repair the orbital bones required an incision below/along my lower eyelid. My lower eyelid does not cover my eyeball the same way as my left side and it’s noticeable in pictures. Could a 5-FU/kenalog injection eliminate the tension and pull that the scar has on my eyelid? If not, what would you recommend?

Regarding anesthesia
Tummy TuckMember Response:
We use only board certified anesthesiologists in our office surgical center. If I am in the hospital, I work with nurse anesthetists but they are being supervised by an MD anesthesiologist. In an office setting it is appropriate to have a MD anesthesiologist caring for you. Remember they will keep you safe, by monitoring your vital signs, keep you hydrated, etc.
Regarding anesthesia
Question:
Do most plastic surgeons use anesthesiologists, or just a nurse anesthetist? To me getting put to sleep is the scary part. Is having the procedures done in a hospital with an anesthesiologist always an option?

Tummy tuck/ hysterectomy
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Hi Dayna. Please give your surgeon a call to ask this question. Sometimes the hysterectomy is done laparoscopically and then the tummy tuck follows. There would not an incision into the abdominal wall. Sometimes the hysterectomy is done "open", by making an incision through the abdominal wall, then this is closed and repaired followed by the tummy tuck. The open or laparoscopic approach to the tummy tuck will be decided by the gynecologist and may depend on their preference, the size of the uterus, or the reason the hysterectomy is being done. Best wishes to you.
Tummy tuck/ hysterectomy

I’m having a TT and a hysterectomy next Friday. Is the hysterectomy performed Lipo scopic through the muscle after my cut is made? Surely it’s no need to cut my muscle right? I forgot to ask this question the other day.

Risk
Tummy TuckMember Response:
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has studied this question and recommends a safe limit of 5 liters of liposuction during surgery. If you are having a tummy tuck then you are also removing skin and fat surgically, so I would limit liposuction the same day to less than 5 liters. You should be properly monitored by an anesthesiologist who can keep your fluids and electrolytes balanced during the surgery. This surgery should be done in the proper setting , a hospital or accredited office facility. It is an excellent question and good luck to you.

Tummy tuck revision
Tummy TuckMember Response:
I think the tugging sensation would be from the belly button being pulled through too high on the skin flap, or too low. Removing the belly button may solve the pain and tugging sensation. Another option would be surgically reopening the skin flap and determining where the belly button wants to naturally sit. No guarantees but it is unusual and I think the tugging sensation may be that it is on constant tension.

Question:
I had a tummy tuck 2.5 years ago and had constant tugging internally from my belly button stalk. I had a revision 3 months ago to remove scar tissue, entrapped nerves and permanent stitches. I still have the tugging sensation. Please help! What can I do to correct this? It is greatly affecting the quality of my life. Thank you.

Breast procedure
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hi Molly, it sounds like surgery would really benefit you in this situation. It is a common problem we see and making the breasts even truly improved womens' lives. The usual approach is to reduce the larger side to match the smaller. Insurance is unlikely to cover this, but please seek a consultation and find out your options. Care Credit often provides affordable solutions. I am in Alexandria VA, not far from Richmond. I can highly recommend Louise Ferland MD in Richmond who is an excellent plastic surgeon.

Breast Reduction and Lipo
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hi Gabby, it sounds like you are a good candidate for a breast reduction. The size you can get down to depends on your anatomy, but you should be able to reduce your breasts to at least half their size or more. I would not recommend transferring fat or tissue from the breasts to another area of the body. Liposuction can be combined with breast reduction sometimes but it will be up to the surgeon's judgment. The breast reduction may take 4-5 hours. Breast reductions truly change women's lives.
Breast Reduction and Lipo
Question:
Hey there! I honestly don't know what size i am, i know a 36 N is too small, i also have tricare so i believe a breast reduction will be covered. I wanted to know if it was possible to have the extra fat transferred to another part of my body? What is the lowest size i can reduce to? Can lipo be done on certain parts of my body due to the reduction? Thank You !!

18 and wanting a breast reduction
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hi Sarah , 18 is a good age to consider breast reduction. All insurance companies have different policies, so your surgeon can help you navigate this possibility. Go and see an ASPS surgeon in your area and have a consultation to learn more. All tissue that is removed will be sent to the pathologist for testing. I have many patients your age whose lives have been changed by having a breast reduction! Good luck!

Hi. My name is Sarah, I am 17, turning 18 very soon and considering a breast reduction. My mother and grandmother both had breast cancer, so I plan to get tested for the gene before speaking to a plastic surgeon near me. I am a size 38 G 220 pounds and 5 7. I have a lot of lower back pain. Will my insurance cover it? Will they do one for an 18 year old?

ADM, Fat transfer to Breasts and MRIs/Mammograms
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
I would echo Dr. Castillo'S recommendations. This is a complex problem and rippling can be caused by saline implants and or malposition, or sometimes by too tight a pocket. Ask your surgeon about switching to silicone implants, downsizing a little, and fixing the malposition. ADM is appropriate despite its expense, since it bottomed out twice. Fat grafting can add volume but also be fine later. Correcting to malposition with a non stretchable ADM is the correct first step. Good luck to you!
ADM, Fat transfer to Breasts and MRIs/Mammograms
Question:
I had Ideal implants under muscle 13 months ago due to assymetry (2 benign lumpectomies). They bottomed out . PS did revision with sutures 3 months ago and I bottomed out (PS was conservative with sutures -he regrets that). They feel like water bags on bottom + are too low. PS suggests ADM and fat transfer. I get MRIs + mammograms yearly. Does ADM interfere w. breast screening? Fix ripples?

Looking to reduce soon!
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Areola reduction is done at the same time as the breast reduction. Though we can't guarantee a cup size, full B or small C is reasonable. You also will gain a breast lift. It is a life changing, wonderful procedure. I would estimate about $9000 with surgery and anesthesia. It is usually a four hour procedure. insurance is sometimes an option but doesn't always cover.

Costs vary widely even between surgeons in the same area. I am in metro DC ( Alexandria, VA). Silicone implants are more costly than saline implants and anesthesia prices vary with how long the surgery is. Approximate cost for surgery, anesthesia and implants in my accredited office facility is about $7500.00. Hope that is helpful.

Risk
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Definitely discuss these concerns with your ASPS board certified surgeon before your surgery. The main risk to be concerned about are DVT which can lead to a pulmonary embolus (rare but important to know about) . Having general anesthesia and an anesthesiologist necessary for the surgery and keeps you safe. To minimize your risks, your BMI should be 30 or less, you should be walking 20-30 minutes a day and not smoking. Also stopping any hormones or birth control pills will lessen risk of DVT. Medical and cardiac clearance as indicated is also important. Avoiding travel for several weeks around the surgery is also important.

Surgery for Minors
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello Naja, yes it is possible to get a breast reduction as a minor, with parent or legal guardian permission. Other important issues to address at a young age are....breast feeding might be affected in the future. It is possible to breast feed after a reduction but technique matters. Also scarring..you will have scars on the breast and need to be ok with this. Patients usually are. Also as others have mentioned it's important that your breasts have stopped growing. It will change your life! As long as you understand the risks and benefits, having this done at an early age can be so beneficial!

Multiple Same Day Surgery
Eyelid SurgeryMember Response:
Please be sure your surgeon is an ASPS Board certified plastic surgeon. If so, their surgical office suite must be certified and accredited, Combining multiple procedures must be done with good judgment and you can plan on two separate surgeries to keep the surgical time within reason. I would recommend you have an anesthesiologist monitoring you during surgery for safety. Anesthesia is appropriate and safer for the procedures you are having.

Does Having had a c-section affect a breast augmentation
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hi Daisy, Congratulations on your twins, and on breastfeeding! The C section should not cause any difficulties with your breast augmentation. Most surgeons will require a medical clearance from your primary care doctor before the surgery, But there is no need to undergo tests now. Find an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon in your area.

It sounds like you need a revision. I would revisit your original surgeon, discuss each detail you mentioned ( it would be nice to have them take and print a photograph so you can look at it together) and see what he/she can offer to fix it. I would also seek a second opinion for revision. See where you feel more comfortable. Best wishes to you.

I had a breast reduction in May 2018 and I am not happy with how it is healing. My breasts are very uneven as my surgeon actually took more fat out of my smaller breast. They sag more now than they did before the surgery. My nipples are two different sizes and don't seem to fit the breast size. The scars look very rough as well. What would you suggest for me in regards to next steps?

Breast Implant Illness
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Be careful about reading too much into a single video. At the same time, you are asking an important and reasonable question. There are many studies showing that there are no clear associations between autoimmune type diseases and breast implants. But if you do have implants and develop an illness, will you worry that it is due to the implants? If so, it may be best to avoid having implants placed until you are comfortable with their safety. If you already have implants, be sure to keep an annual visit with your plastic surgeon to keep updated on the current concerns and get a physical exam to check for capsular contracture or risk of leakage. Best wishes to you!

Tummy TuckMember Response:
Your scar is over a year old, so you are ready for revision if you wish. There is something about the way the skin was closed after the hysterectomy that created the deformity. A plastic surgeon can excise the entire scar, some skin around it and resuture it to be flat and smooth. This is something I would do under anesthesia, not local. Good luck!

Congratulations on your weight loss! You will be a great candidate for a tummy tuck. I would encourage you to consult with a plastic surgeon now. While you may not undergo the surgery right away, it's nice to learn about the procedure and any special issues in your case, find a surgeon you really click with, and let them share the journey with you. I would say consult now, perhaps return to them in 6 months to see where you are and plan together. I think it would be very motivating as well. Certainly stick to the ASPS website, but no substitute for meeting in person. Good luck to you!
Ideal Candidate for tummy tuck
Question:
Currently at 90 pound wt loss (journey started 1/2017) I would like to lose min 40# more for max weight of 130 (5’1” height female). Eventually I plan to have tummy tuck. I am wondering at what point would I be a good candidate and when should I start consulting with dr. No health issues, no meds. I have not yet selected a dr, very nervous about how to find a good dr. Ages for Surgery?
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello, the cost of a breast reduction in my area. is around $9,000 including surgery, anesthesia, facility fee and pathology. It is possible to do a breast reduction at age 15, though usually we wait until age 18. I have done as young as 14 in cases where it was appropriate and the parents of course will need to be involved. I am glad you are asking questions. Please set up a consultation in your area with your parent/ guardian to explore your options. When you do have it done, it will change your life!

Payment
Breast ReductionMember Response:
It depends on your surgeon's office. We work with Care Credit which provides 0% interest for one year to the patient. Most cosmetic surgeries are paid in advance by either Care Credit, Credit card, or the patient making deposits on their account prior to the surgery. Good luck!

Breast lift without implant
Breast LiftMember Response:
Very good question. A breast lift will correct sagging by removing excess skin of the breast and giving it a nice shape. An implant will add volume, increasing your cup size and providing some upper pole fullness. They are two separate entities and you can certainly do a lift without the implant. In fact the lift often heals better without the extra weight of the implant and remember you also have an option to add an implant later if you wish.

Breast Implant Illness
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Your symptoms sound like they may indicate a thyroid problem and certainly chronic stress. "Breast implant illness" is not a known disease though your symptoms are real. Removing the implants is worth considering to eliminate that worry, and focus on your symptoms. An endocrinologist may he helpful.

Problem with sedation
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello, it is certainly possible to have general anesthesia without benzodiazepines for the augmentation. Make sure you have an MD anesthesiologist caring for you, not just a nurse anesthetist. It also may be wise to have it done in a hospital setting rather than office, and have a medical evaluation beforehand, to determine what caused the previous reaction. I think general anesthesia is a wiser choice for the surgery. Best wishes.
Problem with sedation
Question:
Hello, I'm a 23 year old very healthy female. A few months ago I went to get my wisdom teeth removed under sedation. They injected me with fentanyl and midazolam. I had a very bad reaction and would not sedate and a kind of brief psychosis. I know now that I cannot have benzos at all. I want a breast augmentation later on. Is propofol going to be okay for me? What can I do for sedation?

Gynecomastia
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello, this is a common but difficult condition to live with. If you are overweight, take certain medications, or have a hormonal imbalance these can all be factors. The best option is a combination of liposuction and surgical excision of the tissue. It takes about 3 hours and you wearva compression best afterward for a few weeks. It is a life changer for men! You would need a couple of weeks to recover, about 6 before exercises. Set up a consultation and bring a parent with you! Good luck to you!

Aesthetic Genital Plastic SurgeryMember Response:
Hello, This is a common and difficult issue for women after childbearing. Surgery is always a consideration but in the last 3 years there have been tremendous advances with laser resurfacing of the vaginal canal to tighten the tissue, improve lubrication and make tissue younger and healthier. diVA (by Sciton) is amazing and has minimal downtime. It is a series of three treatment over a 3 month period and also helps with urine leakage if that is an issue for you. Look for a Board certified surgeon who performs diVA in your area and meet with your gynecologist as well. Best wishes to you.

"Puffy" nipples
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello John, it sounds like you have tuberous breast tissue where the breast tissue is herniated into the nipple/areola area. This can be corrected with surgery around the areola to allow the tissue to drop back in . It will leave a fairly well concealed scar. Sometimes this is all that is needed, but if excess tissue needs to be removed, it can be done at the same time. Cost varies widely with state and type of facility. In my accredited office facility, I ESTIMATE this would run about $6000 (including surgery and anesthesia. It is a life changer for men and will make your chest look "normal". Best wishes to you. Check into Care Credit as well which can help finance the surgery.
"Puffy" nipples
Question:
I have what some may call "puffy" or large nipples. I do not have gynecomastia, just larger nipples than I would prefer. Would a procedure be possible in order to make them slightly smaller/remove some of the tissue underneath? If so, how much would this cost? Thank you!

Liposuction of the bra rolls
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Congratulations on having a breast reduction, a life changing procedure! The surgeon should mark the bra rolls with your bra on, and luposuction the entire area. Skin on the back is thick, so some of the bra roll may be skin. You may also consider Coolsculpting for this area as it helps the skin to shrink as well. Cost varies widely! Best wishes.

Hello Sally B, you sound like a good candidate for a tummy tuck, provided you are a good candidate for anesthesia. Your body mass index is acceptable. The excess skin can be removed, muscle tightened and your old scar can probably be used for the tummy tuck. It is a restorative procedure, repositioning the muscle and removing the excess skin. Most women tell me it's the "best thing they have ever done". exercise and a healthy diet will make you a better surgical candidate and minimize the risk of complications; I would surges trying to lose about 15 lb ifvyou can. Back when I was 33 years old, I had a hysterectomy. As a result, I have a nice long scar across my lower abdomen and a big old saggy belly. Mommy Makeover
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello Eboni, The muscle separation is common after a second pregnancy and can be repaired surgically (diastasis repair). It really isn't possible to bring it back into proper position with exercise alone. Traditional abdominal exercises ( crunches, sit-ups) tend to make the diastasis worse. Planks and isometric type exercises are good. It sounds like you are a candidate for diastasis repair and possibly tummy tuck if you have excess skin as well. I am in Alexandria, VA and tummy tuck is one of my specialties. I would be delighted to see you for evaluation and since you are referred through ASPS we waive the consultation fee. Sagging breasts may just need a breast lift or perhaps implants or both, depending on your physical exam and your wishes. Good luck to you and hope to hear from you. Dr. Susan Buenaventura

So my frowning belly button isn't rare I've seen this over and over. But i also have an area below it that looks like i was poked and it left a wrinkled indent. How is this fixed? Post breast reconstruction
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
It sounds like you had cancer on the right and prophylactic on the left? Or was the radiation on the right done for another reason? Implants and radiation can be challenging, and fat grafting and or flap reconstruction is worth considering for the left side. It is also possible to do both sides IF you have enough tissue. Fat grafting will be beneficial for both sides, especially the radiated side. But it may not be enough volume for complete reconstruction of both sides, so discuss additional options with an ASPS plastic surgeon as well. Good luck to you.
Post breast reconstruction

I’ve had a prophylactic mastectomy with silicone implants. My breast are now Mis-shapen bilaterally, with a possible leak. Wondering if I have some options to refill my breast with my own fat, though my breast “capsule” has healed. My breast skin and nipples are still intact and I have a history of radiation to the right breast. My surgery was about 5.5 years ago. Thanks!

To lift or to lift and reduce
Breast LiftMember Response:
It is always possible to do just a lift, but removing some breast tissue helps shape the breasts. It is your choice whether you want to have your breasts made smaller. With regard to your weight, elective surgery is safer if your body mass index is around 30 or lower. Find a board certified plastic surgeon in your area for consultation. Best wishes!

Mommy make over
LiposuctionMember Response:
After 5 pregnancies and 4 Cesarean sections you likely will benefit from a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) which will realign your muscles, remove the excess skin and can be combined with liposuction. Your height, weight and medical history are important to stratify your risk. See a board certified plastic surgeon for more detail. Preventing blood clots in the legs is important and can be limited by being at a healthy weight, no smoking , good pain control and limiting the surgical time to abdominoplasty only.

I am sorry to hear about your cousin's breast cancer. Remember that while radiation does damage the tissue, it also cures cancer and prevents it from coming back. Fat grafting will help improve the skin and surrounding tissue on the radiated side. It may take several smaller operations, rather than one big one to achieve her best result. The good news is, it can always be improved and is worth addressing. Best wishes to you

It sounds like you are a great candidate for breast reduction. Most patients get immediate relief after the surgery and it changes their lives in so many positive ways! Find out the cost and check into Care Credit as well. Many insurance companies don't cover breast reduction but most hospitals have reduced rates for self Pay surgery. Hello Erica, the " authorization" from your doctor may require physical therapy for approval for breast reduction. You can probably find the requirements online. Congratulations on moving forward with your breast reduction!

Hello is this procedure possible without full sedation?
Tummy TuckMember Response:
It is important to evaluate each case on an individual basis. For a full tummy tuck, general anesthesia works best to optimize your results and limit the amount of local anesthesia to avoid toxicity. IV sedation is also possible. Focus on what will give you the best results from your surgery, and have an open discussion with your surgeon

Post bilateral mastectomy recon
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
Hello, thanks for your question. If you have decided against reconstruction, the expanders can be removed. Have they been filled up with saline yet? If so, you can discuss removing the saline now with your surgeon, to let you see how it would look and let your tissue recover a little before surgery. The expanders can be removed easily but should be done in a sterile setting in the operating room. I usually recommend full anesthesia for patient comfort. The expanders are removed and a drain is placed. It should take about an hour and cause minimal pain. Drains usually stay in for 1-2 weeks. Also I would consider this part of your reconstruction so it should go through your insurance. Best wishes to you.

tear trough fillers
Dermal FillersMember Response:
Most fillers come in prepackaged syringes that contain 1 to 1.5 cc. The patient pays for the full syringe and I always use the entire amount, placing it where needed. Changing needles to use the remainder on another patient would be a dangerous and unacceptable practice. In the rare case that a patient only wants a portion of the syringe used, the remainder must be discarded. Some fillers like sculptra come in vials but are also intended for single patient use. I inject my own fillers and neurotoxins for patients , Thank you for your question.

Are fillers priced by the vial? More to the point, if a patient need a fraction of the vile, are they charged for the whole vial? To my knowledge, even if the needle is changed, this would be unsanitary, as minute particles of the patient's own tears, or other tissue could contaminate the vial.
Susan K. Buenaventura, MD's Response:
Most fillers come in prepackaged syringes that contain 1 to 1.5 cc. The patient pays for the full syringe and I always use the entire amount, placing it where needed. Changing needles to use the remainder on another patient would be a dangerous and unacceptable practice. In the rare case that a patient only wants a portion of the syringe used, the remainder must be discarded. Some fillers like sculptra come in vials but are also intended for single patient use. I inject my own fillers and neurotoxins for patients , Thank you for your question.
Post surgery
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
It is unusual to still feel stitches on the skin after so long. They may be dissolvable sutures, which never dissolved. Check in with your plastic surgeon for an exam. If there are dissolvable sutures on the surface, they can trim them away for you.

Spair vs anchor
Breast LiftMember Response:
All breast reductions will have scarring but it is well hidden and the trade off (less neck, back and shoulder pain) is tremendous! It's less the technique and more the surgeon's experience that will guide the result. Each patient is different, heals differently and may benefit from different approaches by the same surgeon. Find a surgeon you like and ask to speak to previous patients. Having confidence in your surgeon is thee most important factor! Best wishes to you.

What is the necessary amount of breast tissue for ins to aporive?
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello Pamelyn, you sound like a good candidate for breast reduction. The amount of tissue to be removed safely is usually about half the weight of the breast. All insurance companies vary as to whether they will cover a breast reduction, and if they will, all their criteria and policies are different. Perhaps seek another consultation with someone who will spend more time with you. The surgeon can help you navigate your insurance company's policies and whether coverage is possible. Best wishes to you!
What is the necessary amount of breast tissue for ins to aporive?
Question:
I saw a surgeon & sadly, he was brief and answered few questions. I am small frame, 5'5" & 155 lbs. I am a 36DDD The Dr. said 250 grams is what he would remove from each breast: not asking me about size I wanted, etc.; Replacement Medicare plan said I need a letter of medical necessity from the surgeon. He said a letter from my pain mgmt Dr. would help. What is your opinion? Is my criteria enough?

Breast sensation
Breast ReductionMember Response:
I am not sure exactly what you mean by climbing sensation, but it's certainly possible that any alteration in sensation can be related to your previous surgery. Muscle damage is not likely as the surgery takes place in the skin, fat and breast tissue only. Any new change in your breast should be evaluated by your plastic surgeon or primary care. If any study is needed (ultrasound, mammogram, MRI) to look into this concern further, they can examine you and proceed accordingly. Remember that other conditions can develop in the breast that are unrelated to the surgery so be sure to get evaluated to make sure. Best wishes to you.

I have a problem with my eyes: Do I need a blethoraplasty ? or ptosis surgery? or
Eyelid SurgeryMember Response:
Hello, and it sounds like you may have ptosis. An ASPS plastic surgeon or an oculoplastic surgeon can evaluate you to see if you have upper eyelid ptosis, excess skin, or both. If you have ptosis, the levator muscle needs to be repaired. That is the muscle that opens and closes your upper eyelid. Patients with ptosis tend to look tired because their eyelids are droopy. Excess upper lid skin from the natural process of aging can be removed with blepharoplasty. Distinguishing between the two is an important part of the pre operative evaluation. Best wishe!

Contracture
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
If the contracture is causing deformity or discomfort, it makes sense to treat it. This would involve surgery to remove the implant, remove the capsule (scar tissue) partially or completely, and replace the implant. If it is above the muscle, consider putting it below the muscle. Cost will depend on they type of implant you are replacing, your surgeon and area where you live. In our area, cost for one side would be around $4000. Implant companies are now starting to include coverage for capsular contracture in their warranties. Make sure you ask about this when consulting. Best wishes to you.

Breast Revision Recovery for body builder
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
If your implants are under the pectoral muscle then body building can displace the implants and cause discomfort. While under the muscle is preferred in most cases, in your case it might be best if the implants were placed on top of the pectoral muscle. If they are already on top of the muscle then it sounds like you may need more recovery time. Check in with your surgeon to be sure. Best wishes to you!
Breast Revision Recovery for body builder
Question:
I am a "light" body builder. Ha silicone implants done 2009. 8/2018 my right implant ruptured; left seemed displaced. Had revision 9/2018. Both 350ccs and periareolar. I am 10 weeks into recovery. I am still having some burning in my arm pits, around lateral lower part of my breasts and soreness in sternum. I am a body builder but haven't worked out much yet. Maybe recovery is longer for me?

Question
Arm LiftMember Response:
Hello Joseph, the arm lift involves surgery to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms, above the elbow. It is done in an operating room and must be very precise to avoid injuring vessels or nerves. The scar is on the inner aspect of the arm and goes from armpit to elbow. It takes about 4 hours. The benefit is a lighter, tighter arm, albeit with a scar. Some patients will need liposuction as well. There is very little pain afterward but several weeks of taking it easy to allow healing. Best wishes!

I need help
LiposuctionMember Response:
Hello Jason. I think it is wonderful that you are considering being a physician and surgeon as a career. Becoming a surgeon requires 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, then 5-8 years of surgical training in residency and /or fellowships. For plastic surgery it is 6-8 years of surgical training. So it can be 15 years of education after high school but if you are doing what you love, it is worth it! In college, no particular major is required, but you need a year of Chemistry, Calculus, Biology, Physics, and Organic Chemistry. You also must score well on the MCAT exam which you take in your junior or senior year of college. Being a surgeon and physician is a privilege and an honor. Though it requires hard work and dedication, if it is what you want don't let anything stand in your way! Good luck to you. Dr. Susan Buenaventura

Question:
I am a 16 year old student and I am looking forward to work in the medical field and I am working on a assignment for my EMS class about what I would like to have as my specialty in the future. I’ve been looking for real surgeons to ask because I have a few questions. What are the classes you had to take in order to go to surgery school? How long is the whole process to become a surgeon?

Cool sculpting , Sculpture or Liposuction?
LiposuctionMember Response:
Sounds like you are working hard at keeping in shape! Liposuction is the gold standard for fat removal. I also offer Coolsculpting as it is a nice option when patients don't want surgery or down time. Cost varies widely because Coolsculpting price depends on how many sites you treat AND how many times you need to treat each site. (Each session removes about 20% of the fat.). Coolsculpting can sometimes be more expensive than liposuction but can be done blocks of time without downtime. You will get the best advice seeing a plastic surgeon who offers both rather than somewhere that only does Coolsculpting. In our area, liposuction of full abdomen and love handles would be about $7000. Ten sessions of Coolsculpting to cover the same area can be about $6000. Your concerns about the belly button are suggest you should be sure you don't have a hernia which is commmon after several kids. Find a board. Certified plastic surgeon near you and they will help you decide!
Cool sculpting , Sculpture or Liposuction?
Question:
What is the cost comparison for these 3 procedures? Is liposuction more reliable for the results? I have a stubborn area around my belly button from having three girls , even with doing set up‘s and exercises. . And the other area as love handles. The bellybutton area is really my main focus. Thank you in advance for any advice you might have on these procedures and best results.

Nipples
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
The augmentation involves placing an implant to enhance the breast size. A mastopexy or breast lift will reposition the nipples and remove some excess skin to tighten up the breast. They can be done separately or together. Best wishes to you!

Re: Tummy tuck and health
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Yes, it can be safe to have a tummy tuck if you are medically optimized. Your high blood pressure should be treated by your medical doctor and stable. Your pre diabetes should be addressed with proper diet and your A1C should be stable. Your primary care doctor will work with your plastic surgeon and it will minimize the risk of any complications. Ideally your BMI should be around 30 or less. Best wishes to you!

Regarding chin implant
Dermal FillersMember Response:
Chin implants generally increase the anterior projection on the chin but don't make it longer in the vertical plane. Whether or not a natural look can be achieved depends so much on your pre operative anatomy, but in general I would say yes, anatyralnlook can be achieved.
Regarding chin implant
Question:
Does chin implant really give a natural look to ones face I really doubt?! I'm thinking of undergoing a chin augmentation but I think it is not possible to elongate the mandible with the help of grafts other than correcting the underbites and overbites (based on my knowledge). And the Orthognathic surgery is costly when compared to chin implant. Is it possible to achieve a natural look using implants?

Incontinence problem / childhood injury vaginal area
Aesthetic Genital Plastic SurgeryMember Response:
It will depend on patient's history, exam and symptoms as well as age. DiVA laser treatment is excellent for vaginal resurfacing and helps with stress urinary incontinence as well. If your situation is more complex, seeing a urogynecologist may be helpful as well. Best wishes!

Contour before tummy
Body ContouringMember Response:
Each patient is different. If you are normal weight range and have excess skin of the lower abdomen, and or loose muscle, you may prefer tummy tuck first, then can have liposuction if needed. If you are overweight, liposuction first is wise, then tummy tuck about 6 months later. Healthy diet and active lifestyle will benefit you and help you get better results from your surgery. Best wishes!

Symmastia
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hello, You sound like an excellent. Candidate for breast reduction ( a life changing procedure!) . This will make your breasts much smaller and lift them, which also tends to pull them further apart. If one needs to create a separation between the breasts this can be done at the time of breast reduction. You can also focus on the breast reduction first, heal, and address any residual concerns with a secondary procedure. In the hands of a properly trained plastic surgeon your breast shape and size will only get better! Best wishes.

Areola are big
Breast ReductionMember Response:
It is possible to reduce the areola. If it is just too wide, the excess skin can be removed. If the areola are " puffy" it may be a form of gynecomastia, which can also be corrected surgically. We always offer payment plans via Care Credit. Best wishes!

Breast Reduction at 18
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hi Mattie. If your breasts are excessively large and heavy, and causing you neck and back pain, breast reduction will change your life! At your young age, it's important to discuss breastfeeding, ( it's still possible with the right technique) and scars, as well as the possibility that you may still be growing. If you understand the risks and benefits, breast reduction is a wonderful life changing procedure in teenagers. Best Wishes.

Previous reduction and need agsin
Breast AugmentationMember Response:
It is common to seek a secondary breast reduction after the body changes from pregnancy, perimenopause, and weight fluctuations. If you are too large, I would not plan on an implant, but would look at breast reduction to reduce the size, improve the shape and lift the breasts. This must be done with careful attention to blood supply in view of your previous surgery. Best wishes to you, find an ASPS surgeon in your area for consultation.
