Gayle Gordillo, MD, FACS, Elected President of The Plastic Surgery Foundation

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL – The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF), which supports the research and international activities of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), named Gayle Gordillo, MD, FACS, as its new president. Dr. Gordillo took office at Plastic Surgery The Meeting, the Society's annual scientific meeting, and will serve for one year.

"This is a tremendous honor," Dr. Gordillo said. "I look forward to leading The PSF during the coming year to advancing our scientific research and establishing international partnerships."

"One of my goals for this year is to develop a way to tell the story of The PSF to multiple stakeholders," she adds. "If we want to remain innovative and continue to do the work that is unique to plastic surgery, we need to communicate the value of The PSF. We have a great story to tell."

Noting The PSF's growing focus on global outreach, Dr. Gordillo says the recently established formal relationship between The Foundation and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), an independent body that provides postgraduate education in surgery and provides surgical training throughout that region, is a strong starting point to develop such relationships – as well as mentorship and surgical capacity building opportunities – with other nations.

The PSF awarded more than $1 million in grants with support from members, other plastic surgery specialty societies and industry partnerships in 2020, and Dr. Gordillo says she wants to continue expanding The Foundation's ability to finance plastic surgery-specific research.

Dr. Gordillo is the Chief of Plastic Surgery and Medical Director of Wound Services at Indiana University School of Medicine. Her medical specialties and research areas include chronic wounds, burns, reconstructive surgery and regenerative medicine.

Prior to joining Indiana University, Dr. Gordillo served as professor of plastic surgery, medical director of wound services and director of clinical research at The Ohio State University. Her research has been continuously funded since 2004 by sources such as the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

Dr. Gordillo earned her undergraduate degree in psychology at Stanford University and her medical degree at The Ohio State University. She completed a residency in plastic surgery plus a post-doctoral research fellowship in transplantation at The Ohio State University.
