American Society of Plastic Surgeons Names New York Physician New President

DENVER - Malcolm Z. Roth, MD, F.A.C.S., chief of plastic surgery at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, today was named president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) at Plastic Surgery 11 THE Meeting, the Society's annual scientific conference. Dr. Roth will lead the world's largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons and foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery for a one-year term.

"With more physicians without specialized training marketing themselves as 'cosmetic surgeons,' patient safety and public education will be a primary focus of my tenure," said Dr. Roth. "It is ever important that consumers do their homework and be reminded that any physician can wear a white coat, but not all physicians are board-certified in plastic surgery. As president, I will continue to advance quality care to patients by promoting high standards of physician training, ethics and research in plastic surgery."

An ASPS Member Surgeon since 1991, Dr. Roth has been a member of several ASPS committees including chairman of the Government Affairs Committee and vice president of Health Policy and Advocacy.

Prior to his current appointment at Albany Medical Center, Dr. Roth served as director of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. He has held positions including president of the New York State Society of Plastic Surgeons, president of the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand, president of the New York County Medical Society, and was chairman of the Plastic Surgery Section of the New York Academy of Medicine, among others.

Dr. Roth has been in practice for 23 years and acquired his American Board of Plastic Surgery Certification in 1991. He graduated with his medical degree in 1982 from New York Medical College. He completed his general surgery training at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York. Dr. Roth went on to complete a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center, New York. Continuing his education, Dr. Roth completed a hand and microsurgery fellowship at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Dr. Roth is a published author and frequent lecturer. He lives in Albany where he enjoys spending time with his wife Lisa.
