An exploration of facial rejuvenation through fat grafting

an exploration of facial rejuvenation through fat grafting

Everyone is likely familiar with traditional facial rejuvenation techniques like facelifts, facial implants, fillers and neurotoxins such as Botox. A modern alternative to these procedures is the use of fat grafting, which involves strategically placing fat in the face to enhance the structure and rejuvenate the appearance.

So, what is fat grafting and how does it work for facial rejuvenation? Is it a long-term solution or something that needs to be consistently maintained, such as fillers and neurotoxins? What patients is this procedure best suited for? To gather more insight into the topic of fat grafting as a method of facial rejuvenation, we chatted with ASPS Member Surgeon Katerina Gallus, MD, FACS.

The basics of fat grafting in facial rejuvenation procedures

While facial rejuvenation is an age-old field that has retained its popularity over time, the idea of fat grafting within this area is a relatively new concept. This is especially true in comparison to traditional rejuvenation methods such as facial implants.

"The innovation of hyaluronic acid fillers and fat transfer has made facial implants so much less common than in the past," said Dr. Gallus. "Most patients and their surgeons would prefer to correct the subtle changes of aging or weight loss with filler – in the areas such as the cheek and chin, facial balancing can be achieved without surgery or the potential long-term complications of a facial implant."

Surgeons most often harvest fat via liposuction from different areas of the body and then place it in the face to shape and balance features. The exact area of the body in which the fat is harvested varies from patient to patient and case to case.

A more "natural" feeling alternative to facial implants, fat grafting offers patients the opportunity to achieve long-term results without the constant need for touch-ups that fillers often necessitate. This procedure can be beneficial for men and women of all ages, although certain demographics may be more ideal patients.

"I think any patient in their 30s or older would benefit," said Dr. Gallus. "The use of your own fat and associated growth factors have a rejuvenating effect not seen with off-the-shelf fillers."

While all patients can benefit from facial fat grafting, Dr. Gallus has seen a patient trend.

"Most of the patients that I see in consultation for facial fat grafting are those seeking facial rejuvenation," said Dr. Gallus. "They usually have experience with fillers and are looking for treating several areas at once that may be too costly in a per syringe price or are having another procedure in which adding the facial fat grafting makes sense."

What you need to know about facial fat grafting

As with any surgical procedure, it's important to take key steps to set yourself up for success and to maximize your results. Facial fat grafting for facial rejuvenation is no exception.

Before you decide to take the plunge on facial fat grafting, it's important to take the time to look into the procedure itself. Make sure that you understand the ins and outs as well as the potential complications that can come with the procedure. This can involve both online research as well as discussions with potential surgeons.

To ensure that you get the results that you want without any issues along the way, it's of the utmost importance to find the right surgeon with the right board certifications to do the job.

"Definitely do your research and understand that there are complications with any procedure, so seek a board-certified plastic surgeon for this procedure," said Dr. Gallus

Following facial fat grafting, there will definitely be a period of time that calls for rest and relaxation. Your surgeon will provide you with guidelines before the procedure that dictate how much time you should expect to limit activity and maximize rest following.

"Additionally, there will be swelling after the procedure that can last for two weeks," said Dr. Gallus. "So, plan for enough time for recovery from swelling and bruising."

If you think this procedure is right for you, start by seeking a board-certified plastic surgeon who is an ASPS member. Facial fat grating is an excellent alternative to traditional facial procedures, harvesting fat from other areas of the body to shape and define the face. A more permanent solution than fillers, facial fat grafting is an excellent choice for any patient who is looking to rejuvenate their appearance without the need for continued maintenance or expensive implants.
