Difference in implants

Breast Augmentation

Member Response:

You are correct, breast implants are not filled with gummy bears! The "gummy bear" designation is not a medically derived term but more of community driven term. As such, there is no clearly defined agreement on exactly what makes up these "gummy bear" implants. To some extent, all silicone implants available today are gummy bears, meaning they are all cohesive to some extent. This means the silicone molecule is somewhat "stuck" to the silicone molecules next to it. The more of these attachments are present, the more cohesive and thus more firm the silicone becomes. Some refer to these highly cohesive implants as "extra gummy". I hope this helps. Best of luck to you! G. Robert Meger MD

6 months after

Breast Augmentation

Member Response:

Heather: I'm sorry you are not happy with your breast augmentation. You don't state what you don't like about them but as long as the implants are soft and there is no considerable build up of scar tissue you would not need a capsulectomy, just removal of the implants. Each practice is different but if you are that unhappy I can't imagine your surgeon charging you more than anesthesia and facility fees to remove the implants s/he placed. Best of luck to you! G. Capsular Contracture??

Breast Augmentation

Member Response:

Hi Kimblee. It does sound like maybe you have developed a capsular contracture. When this occurs first the breast gets firm then it gets drawn up toward your collarbone. You should be seen by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for diagnosis. Initial treatment may consist of a medication that was actually developed for asthma. If this doesn't improve it, you may require another surgery to replace the implant and remove the scar tissue. Some implant manufacturers now warrant for capsular contractures and you may at the least receive a free implant depending on what implants you have. If you follow up with a surgeon different than the one who placed your implants you should obtain your implant info prior to this appointment to streamline the warranty process. Best of luck to you! Fat transfer breast augmentation

Breast Augmentation

Member Response:

Great question! The risks include the regular risks of liposuction such as bleeding, infection, irregular surfaces etc plus the risk of placing the fat into the breasts. The main risk of this is fat necrosis (death of fat cells) which can result in cysts, contour deformities or infection to name just a few. There is a lot more to this procedure than just sucking the fat out of one area and sticking it in your breasts. It's an art form and when done correctly can result in beautiful results but don't expect to get much more than one cup size of enhancement. My advice is to choose your surgeon carefully. Many doctors advertise they perform this procedure but don't do it correctly. Definitely seek out a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who is experienced in fat transfer. Best of luck to you! G. Robert Meger MD
