Ask a Surgeon
Dr. Joseph Mlakar participates in the ASPS Ask A Surgeon service. View responses to public questions below.
Stopping it from growing again
Breast ReductionMember Response:
If you have a breast reduction now, your results should last years, unless you gain a massive amount of weight. Breasts "growing back" is exceedingly rare. Hormonal therapy or suppression is not indicated. Have the surgery. Make an appointment with a plastic surgeon in your region.
Masculinizing Chest Surgery
Body MasculinizationMember Response:
Yes. But in my region, most plastic surgeons do not accept insurance coverage for this line of work, and most insurance carriers do not cover it. Call and ask the plastic surgery offices in your geographic region.
is it possible to become almost flat chested from a 30DD
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Yes, but the trade off is scarring, and possible nipple sensation reduction. Schedule a consult with one or more plastic surgeons in your geographic area. They will help guide you.
Jaw
General ReconstructionMember Response:
For improving the jaw line following molar loss from an accident, your first stop should be your dental profession. He can refer you to a prosthedontist (also a dental professional) who may be able to build an oral appliance to restore both form and function. Plastic surgery consultation can be considered after your dental health is optimized.
I need to ask about a facelift?
FaceliftMember Response:
A typical facelift procedure includes the face, jowl, cheek, and lateral brow. But a facelift does not describe a single operation, but a large variety of similar operations. Consult your local plastic surgeon and discuss your options in person.
Who is at fault?
Breast Implant RevisionMember Response:
Ultimately, you chose the surgeon, and the surgery. Surgical results are never guaranteed. Talk about your concerns with your original surgeon. Many plastic surgeons are like me, and offer deep discounts for revision to patients who are unhappy with their outcome following initial surgery. If you would like, get an opinion from other plastic surgeons. Ultimately, choose a plastic surgeon, and proceed with a plan and surgeon that you trust. Expect additional expenses.
surgery concerns
Breast Implant RevisionMember Response:
In general, exchange of breast implants is an easier operation, and a much easier recovery. But you are also ten years older. Is implant exchange all you need? Consult your plastic surgeon, and discuss options after a careful exam.
Getting insurance approval
Breast ReductionMember Response:
It is becoming more and more difficult to get insurance approval for breast reduction surgery. You may wish to consider financing, and paying for breast reduction surgery on your own. If you find a surgeon who agrees to remove 500 grams per breast to meet your insurance approval, you may not obtain the breast size and shape that you desire. Talk to a few of your local plastic surgeons, and find one you trust.
Requirements
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Breast reduction can be completed on any size breast, in any size patient. Unfortunately, insurance only covers breast reduction surgery under limited parameters. If you want a breast reduction, and you are hoping insurance will pay for it, start by talking to your gynecologist or family doctor. If appropriate, they can refer you to a local plastic surgeon. If you plan on paying out of pocket, schedule a plastic surgery consult directly.
Do I need Gynocamastia surgery
LiposuctionMember Response:
You will not see the full results of your liposuction gynecomastia reduction for six to twelve months post-operatively, so be patient. If you still have residual fullness after that time, discuss it with your original surgeon. Occasionally, direct tissue re-excision may be required.
