Strattice Mesh removal with Explantation
Breast Implant RemovalMember Response:
Hi there, The mesh can often be removed at time of explanation. However, mesh removal will increase operative complexity, postoperative pain, and the likelihood for need for drain use after surgery. Leaving in the mesh should be safe. I would recommend discussing the pros and cons of these approaches with your surgeon. All the best! Caleb Steffen, MD, FACS
how can tiny eyes be enlarged
Eyelid SurgeryMember Response:
Hi There, Certainly, pictures would be helpful. There could be at least two problems to which you are referring. First, the aperture of your eyes could be small which may be genetic but could potentially be adjusted with various procedures for your canthus, particularly your lateral canthus. Second, I agree with Dr. Kim that your brows could be compressing your eyes/eyelids even after a successful blepharoplasty. Hope this helps. I also recommend consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Best! Caleb Steffen, MD, FACS
Mastectomy scar for oncoplastic lumpectomy?
Breast ReconstructionMember Response:
Hi there, These are important questions. It sounds like you have done your homework on oncoplastic breast reconstruction. It also sounds like you just had surgery. Usually, time is the most important factor to improving early post-operative appearance. As far as different approaches for your different breasts, this choice could be a result of the tumor or because of preoperative differences in your breasts. In short, all of this could be perfectly normal. At this time, I would recommend discussing these concerns with your board-certified plastic surgeon. Wishing you well in your recovery! under eye filler
Dermal FillersMember Response:
Hi there, Thanks for reaching out! It is hard to say what the status of your filler is without knowing how far out you are or a few more details about your procedure. Filler under eye is complex and should be performed by board-certified plastic surgeons or their trusted injectors. At this point, I would advise that you reach out to your board-certified plastic surgeon for further advise. Hope you are better soon! Caleb Steffen, MD, FACS
Complications
Tummy TuckMember Response:
This is an important problem. Hopefully you can connect with your operating surgeon who can guide you through the process. If your surgeon was not a board certified plastic surgeon, you may want to find one in your area for further consultation. Treatments for problems like these can include antibiotics, wound care, drains, and further surgery. Hope you are well soon!
Pains after the procedure
Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hi there, I'm sorry you're still having discomfort. Certainly, the healing process can vary from person to person. Your pains may be part of the healing process, or you could have other problems which need to be addressed. I would recommend bringing these concerns to your board-certified plastic surgeon. In the end, most breast reduction patients are extremely satisfied with their life changing operation. I hope you get there soon as well! All the best! Caleb Steffen, MD, FACS
Scar tissue in gynaecomastia
Male Breast ReductionMember Response:
Hard to tell from your picture. Perhaps a friend could take a more standardized photo. Usually, patience is what is needed in cases such as these. Check in with your surgeon as soon as possible.
How many people come for counseling?
RhinoplastyMember Response:
One of my first rules is that I will not do surgery on people who don't want it. If in doubt, don't have surgery. Rhinoplasty is a big surgery and very rewarding for my patients who have it. But you need to be up for the recovery and accepting of the risks of surgery. Take your time and make sure you are pursuing this for the right reasons.
Removal of raised mole from nostril
General ReconstructionMember Response:
This appears to be benign. A minimalistic approach will be best here based on location. Have it shaved with the contour of your nose and sent for pathologic analysis. See a board certified plastic surgeon to care for you on this.
Is my nose on the right track to look like projected
RhinoplastyMember Response:
Coming along. It can take upwards of a year for final swelling to resolve.

Nail unit reconstruction
General ReconstructionMember Response:
Hi there, You have a relatively common problem. There are different approaches to nailbed scarring including scar revision/repair as well as nailbed grafting. I specialize in plastic surgery of the hand and perform nail bed repairs regularly. I'm sure that there are many board-certified plastic surgeons close to home who can help you with this problem. Best wishes! Caleb Steffen, MD, FACS
Smoking before surgery
Tummy TuckMember Response:
Hi there, I agree with 2 months. Of course, the smoking cessation requirements are for your own good. I test my patients. If they come back positive before surgery, I will cancel. It's difficult to quit smoking--I wish you all the best. Your surgeon may be able to point you in the right direction for some techniques, providers, or medications to help you quit. Best! Dr. Steffen repaired a birth defect on my teenage daughter's breast. It looks absolutely fantastic! He has a wonderful bedside manner and I'm thrilled to have him as our doctor. ~Michelle
I have struggled most of my adult life with large breasts and after three children the condition worsened. I started to make healthier decisions to try to correct the issue on my own. After several years I noticed they were a contributing factor to several health problems. I was going to the chiropractor at least once a month, I had almost permanent indentations on my shoulders from my bra straps, and I had skin irritations on my chest all summer. I also noticed my posture was getting worse. My confidence in myself was starting to fade. That’s when I decided I would look into a breast reduction. I can safely say that having a breast reduction was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The next best decision was having Dr. Steffen do the procedure. I didn’t want to drive hours away to a big city to see a physician I didn’t know. As soon as I met Dr. Steffen and his staff I felt like I had made the right decision. He answered all of my questions about the procedure, showed before and after pictures of past surgeries, and took time to make sure I was comfortable and prepared. I’ve never had sedation or surgery before so I was a nervous wreck, but they made me feel at ease every step of the way. Now, I’m enjoying the results. My posture has improved, my back pain is almost non-existent, and friends and co-workers have stated how confident I look. I’m so glad I chose Dr. Steffen to be my physician!
