Description of Fellowship: The Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics is seeking a highly motivated medical student to join our team as the Craniofacial Research and Innovation Fellow. This fully funded research fellowship year will focus on all aspects of cleft and craniofacial surgery including clinical outcomes, sociodemographic disparities, education, biodesign/innovation and translational research. As the fellow, you will work with faculty, residents, medical students, as well as multidisciplinary clinical and research teams to initiate and progress projects to completion. You will develop the skills to prepare IRB protocols and grants, collect and analyze data, and submit work for presentation and publication. At the end of the fellowship year, there will be an opportunity to pursue a clinical rotation with the UW-Madison Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Unique aspects of this position include the opportunity to work with undergraduate students from the UW-Madison Department of Bioengineering on projects through the BioDesign course as well as involvement in the commercialization of novel technologies through the UW-Madison Discovery to Product programs. Medical students with backgrounds in biomedical engineering, computer programming, consulting and/or business are highly encouraged to apply. This position will include the following objectives: 1) Complete coursework related to human protection and laws which govern clinical research. 2) Develop NIH-style project summaries, study hypotheses, primary and secondary aims, significance and innovation for new projects. 3) Improve your knowledge and development of study design, research methodology, data collection, storage and analysis. 4) Gain basic statistical skills and work closely with Department of Surgery statisticians. 5) Prepare and submit works for presentation at local, regional and national meetings. 6) Drive projects to completion by preparing and submitting manuscripts to high impact factor journals. 7) Conduct monthly meetings with the Director of Research to monitor progress. 8) Communicate effectively with students, residents, research coordinators, director of research and principal investigators to ensure projects move forward. 9) Present research accomplishments to the Division of Plastic Surgery at the conclusion of your fellowship experience.
