Breast Surgery & Body Contouring SymposiumOptional Program: Comprehensive Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction
Saturday August 16, 2008 1:00 - 6:30 pm
Overview | Objectives | Program OverviewThe goal of this course is to provide a current, pragmatic overview of techniques and strategies that will guide clinical management and decision making in free flap breast reconstruction. This course will be directed to surgeons with all levels of experience in free flap breast reconstruction. Specifically, we have designed the program to be of interest to surgeons considering initiating free flap techniques in their breast reconstruction practice, surgeons who use free flap techniques on a limited basis in their practice and surgeons who routinely perform free flap breast reconstruction. The program will include a review of pertinent operative anatomy, and detailed descriptions of the surgical techniques employed for harvesting the most commonly used free flaps for breast reconstruction in clinical practice. Factors that frequently influence intraoperative decision making will also be discussed. The faculty have broad-based knowledge in a variety of these techniques and have a willingness to share their experience, both good and bad. Panels will focus on the management of critical issues and controversies facing surgeons who perform free flap reconstructions, including avoidance and management of complications and the means for enhancing operative outcomes and efficiency. To provide for comprehensive dialogue, selected time has been allotted for faculty and audience interaction. After completion of this program, participants will have an enhanced knowledge of the scope and application of microsurgical techniques in breast reconstruction, including the specifics of patient and flap selection, flap harvest and inset techniques, and avoidance and management of complications. Back to Top Objectives- Provide a thorough knowledge of the anatomy and basic techniques in free flap breast reconstruction
- Present a detailed review of each of the free flaps currently used in breast reconstruction
- Review the current strategies in free flap breast reconstruction including patient selection, flap selection, perioperative management, and the management of complications
- Allow strong participation from faculty and course participants
