CHICAGO – Brian Kinney, MD, clinical assistant professor of plastic surgery at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC), has been named president of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF). The PSEF is the research and educational arm of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world’s largest plastic surgery association and foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Dr. Kinney took office during Plastic Surgery 2005, the society’s annual scientific meeting, and will serve for one year. “As president of the PSEF, it is my hope to work with the staff to provide greater service to members, improve the educational options available and rejuvenate our already successful research program,” said Dr. Kinney. “We have unique opportunities facing the specialty in the upcoming year. I want to continue the successes we’ve had working collaboratively with the sub-specialty organizations. Additionally, as we approach a historic juncture with the potential reintroduction of silicone implants, I hope to further develop our relationship with the FDA and provide strong direction in the area of physician education courses for these devices.”
Throughout his medical career, Dr. Kinney has been committed to both the PSEF and ASPS. He serves on the PSEF and ASPS boards of directors and the ASPS Executive Committee. He has also worked on the ASPS/ASAPS Breast Implant Task Force, Governance Task Force, Research Program Task Force.
Dr. Kinney has served as column editor of the ASPS Plastic Surgery News, guest reviewer of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of ASPS, guest article reviewer of the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Journal and guest book reviewer of the Annals of Plastic Surgery.
He is an active member of more than a dozen professional associations including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, American Medical Association, American Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Association, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, Association for the Advancement of Science, California Society of Plastic Surgeons, Southern California Section of the American College of Surgeons and the Los Angeles Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr. Kinney received his medical degree at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his residency in general and plastic surgery at UCLA. He received his board certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1992.
