American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Names Minnesota Physician New President

For Immediate Release: September 27, 2005

CHICAGO – Bruce Cunningham, MD, professor of surgery and director, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Minnesota, has been named president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world’s largest plastic surgery association and the foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Dr. Cunningham took office during Plastic Surgery 2005, the Society’s annual scientific meeting and will serve for one year.

“As president of ASPS I will continue the society’s strong commitment to patient safety and dedication to educate the public on both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, as well as issues critical to the vitality of the specialty,” said Dr. Cunningham. “Two major issues for the specialty as well as all of medicine are the inadequate reimbursement received from insurance companies and Medicare and the tremendous burden of increasing medical malpractice premiums placed on physicians because of the broken tort system in this country.”

As an influential voice in the plastic surgery community, Dr. Cunningham serves on the board of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation, the research and educational arm of the ASPS, and the ASPS Board of Directors. He has served as an officer for the Minnesota Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons, the Rhinoplasty Society and has been chair of The American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Cunningham is an active member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, American Medical Association, World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, American College of Surgeons, Association of Academic Chairman of Plastic Surgery, North American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, Council of Regional Plastic Surgical Societies, Academy of Minnesota Plastic Surgeons, Hennepin County Medical Society, Minnesota State Medical Society, Minneapolis Surgical Society, Minnesota Academy of Plastic Surgeons and the Midwestern Association of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Cunningham received his medical degree and completed residency in plastic surgery at Northwestern University, Chicago. He completed his general surgery training and microsurgical research fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Cunningham received his board certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1981.

He resides in Minneapolis, MN.
