2007 Procedural Statistics

Procedural StatisticsSince 2003, statistics have been collected through the first online national database for plastic surgery procedures, Tracking Operations and Outcomes for Plastic Surgeons (TOPS). This data, combined with the annual survey sent to more than 17,000 board-certified physicians in specialties most likely to perform plastic surgery, results in the most comprehensive census on plastic surgery procedures.

Patients of Courage

Patients of Courage BadgeThe Patients of Courage: Triumph Over Adversity program honors reconstructive plastic surgery patients whose lives were restored through reconstructive plastic surgery and whose charitable actions influence the lives around them.

ASPS Member Surgeons nominated patients who, despite the difficulties of their reconstructive procedures, turned their challenges into opportunities to inspire and help others. These awards are supported by Ethicon, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company.

Skin Flaps Deliver Cancer-fighting Therapy, ASPS Study Reveals
Plastic surgeons have delivered cancer fighting proteins, or gene therapy, through skin flaps to previously cancerous areas on rats with a 79 percent reduction in tumor volume, according to a study in May’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).   Full Story...

Breast Reconstruction Advances Fix Distortions Left by Lumpectomy
Lumpectomy or breast conservation surgery is the most common type of breast cancer surgery currently performed. A benefit of the surgery is that only part of the breast is removed, but a drawback can be the resulting physical appearance of the breast, which may be disfigured, dented or uneven. A report in April’s PRS journal, examines advances plastic surgeons have made in breast reconstruction to repair the damage left when cancer is removed. Full Story...

Plastic Surgeons Play Pivotal Role in War Injury Research
Plastic surgeons will play a pivotal role over the next five years developing groundbreaking therapies to better treat U.S. soldiers critically injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded $85 million in grant funding to the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM), a multi-institutional network of plastic surgeons and other physicians who specialize in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Full Story...
