ASPS President's Message

ASPS President: Richard D’Amico, MD, F.A.C.S.

Richard D'Amico, ASPS PresidentASPS

With the litany of primary care providers, psychiatrists, and other physicians now performing plastic surgery procedures, it can be extremely confusing to truly understand a doctor’s qualifications.

It is more important than ever that you do your own research to locate the doctor that is right for you. By visiting this website, you have taken an important step in this decision-making process – educating yourself.

For over 75 years, the primary goal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has been to advance the quality of care for and safety of plastic surgery patients by demanding the highest standards in our members.

ASPS Member Surgeons are trained and certified specifically in plastic surgery. Doesn’t it make sense that no one is more qualified to perform plastic surgery than a plastic surgeon?

Choosing an ASPS Member Surgeon ensures that your procedure will be performed by a surgeon who:

  • is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada;
  • has graduated from an accredited medical school;
  • has at least six years of surgical training and experience (with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery);
  • operates only in accredited medical facilities;
  • adheres to a strict code of ethics;
  • fulfills mandatory continuing medical education requirements.

As the president of ASPS, which represents over 90 percent of board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States, I am pleased to offer you a wealth of educational tools to help you choose the best surgeon to fit your individual needs.

I invite you to visit our How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon section where you can learn even more about the qualifications of ASPS Member Surgeons.

Our Procedures guide contains a wealth of information about both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, including the latest procedures like body contouring, injectables and more.

Also, you can download our consumer podcast, Today in Plastic Surgery, and listen to the latest information on a variety of plastic surgery topics.

Once you have done your research, use our Choose Your ASPS Member Surgeon tool to locate an ASPS Member Surgeon in your local area.

Thank you for visiting ASPS, and I encourage you to return often to learn about the latest advances and innovations in plastic surgery.
